Sacred Valley Tours Ancient Trails of the Incas Cusco- Full Day Tour

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a relaxed and incomparably beautiful stretch of small villages and ancient ruins spread across a broad plain and rugged mountain slopes northwest of Cusco. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a valley in the Andes of Peru, close to the Inca capital of Cusco. It is fed by numerous rivers which descend through adjoining valleys and gorges, and contains numerous archaeological remains and villages. The valley was appreciated by the Incas due to its special geographical and climatic qualities. It was one of the empire’s main points for the extraction of natural wealth, and the best place for maize production in Peru.

Through the valley rolls the revered Río Urubamba (called the Willcamayu by the Incas; today it is also called the Vilcanota in one section), a pivotal religious element of the Incas’ cosmology. The Incas believed not only that the flow of the Urubamba was inexorably tied to the constellations and the mountain peaks, but also that the river was the earthbound counterpart of the Milky Way. With the river as its source, the fertile valley was a major center of agricultural production for the Incas, who grew native Andean crops such as white corn, coca, potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables in expansive fields and along spectacularly terraced mountain slopes…Even though the villages of the Sacred Valley, stretching about 100km (62 miles) from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, are highlights of many tourist itineraries and are coveted by hotel developers, they remain starkly traditional. Quechua-speaking residents work the fields with primitive tools and harvest salt with methods unchanged since the days of the Incas, and market days although now conducted to attract the tourist trade as well as inter village commerce – remain important rituals.

Day 1

The Sacred Valley is one of the most important sites of your visit to the Imperial City of Cusco, also named the Vilcanota Valley we will visit the most traditional and archaeological sites such as Pisaq and its´traditional market and Ollantaytambo with its´craft market and the town of Chinchero with its´ruins and traditional textile market.

Pisaq: Is located at the entry of the Urubamba Valley,it is a beautiful mestizo town where you can clearly see the old city which has its´prehispanic terraces and the modern part with colonial trends. The main attraction is the Indian market where you can find a great variety of typical crafts and textiles of the reg ion.We will observe the typical outfits that the locals wear as well as inhabitants of nearby  and far away towns to come to the market. We will also be keen of their ancestral ways of doing business which is known as ¨trueque¨or trade.Visiting the old Colonial Church is a must where masses have been celebrated on Sundays since old times in quechua which is the Inca´s native tongue.

After visiting the church we will visit the Varoyocs which are the different town leaders and we wil be able to see the actual irrigation methods that they use which have not changed from the distant beginning. And last but not least the ancient Inka observatory for astronomical purposes.

Urubamba: To reach Urubamba we will pass through the towns of Coya, Lamay, C alca,Yucay, and Urubamba watching beautiful flora and fauna during the ride which takes aproximately 45 minutes
to reach Urubamba which lies in the heart of the Sacred Valley. This is a very comfortable and fertile area which was a very important agricultural center during the Prehispanic days.

We will take advantage of this  nice enviornment and have lunch at a typical restaurant where you will be able to enjoy delicious Peruvian food.
Ollantaytambo: In the afternoon we head to Ollantaytambo , known as the Valley of Tambo which is the only inhabited Inca town and lies on the banks of the Vilcanota River and extends all the w ay to Machu Picchu. We will visit the famous Ollantaytambo fortress  which outstands in the valley.

Chinchero: On our way back to Cusco we will stop and visit Chinchero and its´small chapel. Just as Pisaq is well known for its´market so is Chinchero only that the market here is smaller but more traditional and richer in its´textiles offering a vast majority of them.
Having ended our visit we head back to Cusco.
